The ACLU filed a lawsuit claiming the constitutional rights of same-sex couples are being violated by a new law that bars insurance for some domestic partners.
The lawsuit argues that there is "no compelling interest" in denying benefits for domestic partners when heterosexual partners get the same benefits. Supporters say the law saves tax dollars and follows the spirit of a 2004 vote in which Michigan residents defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
Many Michigan cities, such as Ann Arbor, and universities, including the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University have extended benefits to same sex couples. Such a ban may affect insurance claims and coverage.
