The vast majority of us in Michigan don't think twice before hopping into our car to run to the grocery store, or commute to and from work. But while driving is a common part of our daily routine, it is also likely one of the most dangerous things that we are likely to do each day. After medical conditions such as heart disease and cancer, motor vehicle accidents are one of the primary causes of death.
Tragically, it only takes a moment for an ordinary car trip to turn into a fatal accident. Last Sunday afternoon a 78-year-old man from Kalamazoo was killed in a two-car accident. His 75-year-old wife, who was driving the car at the time of the accident, was also seriously injured. As of earlier this week, she was in critical condition at an area medical center.
According to Kalamazoo County sheriff's investigators, the couple was traveling eastbound as they approached an intersection. Deputies say that they may not have completely stopped before advancing into the intersection where their car was struck in the side by a southbound minivan. According to local news reports, the 78-year-old man was ejected from the vehicle by the force of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The couple also had a ten year child in the car who was not seriously injured in the crash.
There were three occupants of the minivan, a couple, both aged 44 and a 20-year-old man, all apparently from the same family. All three suffered minor injuries in the crash and were treated and released.
